FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

We are pleased to announce the IAA-CSIC Severo Ochoa School on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Astronomy, which will take place in person in Granada, Spain, from September 28 to October 2, 2026, at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, IAA-CSIC.

Modern astronomy is entering a data-intensive era in which Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are becoming essential tools for scientific discovery. This School will provide graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scientists with practical training in state-of-the-art AI and ML techniques applied to real astronomical datasets.

The scientific program will be organized around different ML/AI techniques over five different astronomical topics:

1) Analysis of Radio Surveys: Data augmentation and automated morphological classification of radio sources using CNNs and Vision Transformers.
2) Large-Scale Structure of the Universe: Graph Neural Networks for classification and regression tasks on dark matter halo simulations.
3) Gamma-Ray Astronomy: Deep learning-based image and waveform reconstruction for Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes.
4) Unsupervised Learning for astronomical surveys: High-dimensional embeddings and clustering algorithms applied to chemical tagging of star clusters.
5)  Image Reconstruction with sparse interferometric arrays: Optical/infrared interferometry deconvolution using Deep Image Priors Neural Networks.

The School is aimed at graduate students in astronomy, physics, data science, or related disciplines, as well as postdoctoral researchers, early-career scientists, and researchers seeking practical experience with modern machine-learning workflows. Participants are expected to have Python programming experience, familiarity with scientific computing tools such as NumPy, PyTorch and Jupyter notebooks, and astronomy knowledge.

Registration is now open! Early registration fee is 300 € for registrations completed before 15 July  2026. From 15 July 2026, a 50 € surcharge will apply. The fee includes participation in all lectures and tutorials, course materials, a daily coffee break, four lunches, the welcome cocktail, and the School dinner. Attendance is limited to maximize interaction during the hands-on sessions, and registrations will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
