Descripción/Description:

The Astronomy & Astrophysics Section of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is offering a postdoctoral fellowship and a PhD scholarship for research on theoretical and computational  astrophysics in the group of Dr. Jonathan Mackey. The project, “High- Energy Radiation from Interaction Supernovae”, is funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC) Laureate Awards programme  and will investigate particle acceleration and high- energy radiation processes in stellar- wind bubbles,  in supernovae interacting with dense stellar winds, and in young supernova remnants. Successful candidates will work with Jonathan Mackey and existing group members, and will have the opportunity to collaborate locally and internationally within the H.E.S.S. collaboration, the CTA Consortium, and with Prof. Aharonian and colleagues.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will receive a salary (plus generous pension and social insurance  contributions), computer equipment needed for work, and a travel allowance. This is a fixed term position for circa 3 years, including an inital probationary period. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Physics, Astronomy & Astrophysics, or closely related field, ideally with experience of  research in theoretical and computational High- Energy Astrophysics. She/He will have demonstrated
excellent mathematical and computational skills, be strongly self- motivated and able to conduct independent research as part of a team, have experience using high- performance computing facilities and analysing large datasets, and have excellent written and spoken English language skills. Access to  supercomputing time in Ireland and other European supercomputing centres will be available.  Membership of the H.E.S.S. collaboration will be provided for, including travel to collaboration
meetings. The Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate with the PhD student on aspects of this project and will contribute to the mentoring of the student. Start date should be in the 2nd half of 2019. Interested candidates should send a curriculum vitae including a publication list, plus a statement of  research interests and career goals (both as PDF documents), and arrange for two letters of reference to  be sent by email to Anne Grace (mailto:ag@cp.dias.ie). Informal scientific enquiries about the
positions may be directed to Jonathan Mackey (mailto:jmackey@cp.dias.ie), and submission enquiries may be made to Anne Grace (mailto:ag@cp.dias.ie).
The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies is an equal opportunities employer.
The deadline for applications is Friday 15th February 2019 at 5pm GMT.
