Descripción/Description:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to join the Observational Cosmology and Extragalactic astrophysics group at the CSIC Institute of Space Sciences (ICE; https://www.ice.csic.es), located at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus in Bellaterra. We welcome candidates with interests in supernova physics and/or cosmology to work with Dr. Lluís Galbany.

Our group is currently involved in some of the most exciting extra-galactic surveys ongoing or planned for the near future [the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the Physics of the Accelerating Universe (PAU), the ESA Euclid mission, the Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) in the LSST, and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI)], as well as involved in large supernova collaborations [the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP), the Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey for Transient Objects (PESSTO), the Global Supernova Project (GSP)]. In these collaborations we have taken lead roles, not only at the scientific level but also in data management, infrastructure, and instrumentation.

We are seeking candidates with interest and relevant experience to contribute and benefit from these projects. The candidate will also be encouraged to pursue her/his own research interests. In addition to work in the group, the successful applicant will become part of a vibrant research community and will be able to enjoy interaction with the many other researchers at ICE in the field of transient research, as well as with other groups at the department (planets, solar and stellar astrophysics, galaxies, cosmology). Opportunities for Master student supervision are likely available.

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Physics/Astronomy or related fields by the starting date, which should not be earlier than September 2021 and, ideally, demonstrated experience in observational astronomy and/or cosmology. The appointment is initially for 2 years, plus a third year awarded upon satisfactory progress.

Applicants must submit an e-mail to the attention of Dr. Lluís Galbany (lluisgalbany_at_gmail_dot_com) with the subject line “ICE Postdoc position - Candidate name” and a cover letter (max. 2 pages) stating the motivation for this specific job and suitable background, a curriculum vitae, a summary of previous and current research (limited to 2 pages), a research proposal (limited to 1 page), and a list of three researchers familiar with the candidate’s work who would be willing to write reference letters supporting the application upon request. A complete application must be received by December 15, 2020 for full consideration.

We are committed to increasing the number of underrepresented groups in our workforce and therefore we encourage applications from such qualified individuals. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation or age.

Remuneration: The gross annual salary will be 37000 EUR, with deductions of up to 20% for income tax (IRPF) and public health insurance dependent on the candidate’s personal situation (with coverage included for spouse, de facto partner and children).
