Descripción/Description:

CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas) announces the upcoming opening of a predoctoral 4-years position for outstanding young MSc graduates interested on working towards a PhD Thesis in experimental physics.

CIEMAT-FP participates in the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), an initiative to build the next generation ground-based very high energy gamma-ray instruments, and in the MAGIC project. Our group has been a key player in the construction and recent installation of the first 23-m diameter Large Size Telescope (LST) of CTA in the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos, in La Palma, and is involved in the deployment of the next three. In addition, our group is a member of the MAGIC collaboration, which has been operating two 17-m telescopes located at the same observatory for the last 15 years.

The purpose of this Phd position is to participate in the acquisition and exploitation of simultaneous observations with MAGIC and LST. Depending on the candidate’s preference, these can target the study of transient phenomena with observations with very high energy gamma-rays, or the development and exploitation of an intensity interferometer to resolve stars in the optical band with unprecedented angular resolution. The candidate shall participate also in the commissioning phase of the LST2 to LST4 telescopes.

The official call can be found at https://www.ciemat.es/cargarAplicacionOfertaEmpleo.do?identificador=1724. The deadline for applications is July 30th.

The candidate must have a Master’s Degree in Astrophysics, Physics or similar at the moment of the formalization of the contract. A good English knowledge and strong interest in high-energy phenomena or stellar physics. Experience in C++ and Python programming will be also valuable.

The contract is expected to start on the last quarter of 2021.
