Descripción/Description:

PhD position in Gamma ray astrophysics at CIEMAT:

Science with MAGIC and the first telescopes of CTAO

CIEMAT-FP participates in the construction of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), the next generation ground-based very high energy gamma-ray instrument: the group has been a key player in the construction of the first 23-m diameter Large-Sized Telescope (LST) of CTAO in the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos (ORM), La Palma, and is involved in the deployment of the next three LSTs. In addition, our group is a member of the MAGIC collaboration, which has been operating two 17-m telescopes located at the same observatory for the last 20 years.

The main purpose of this project is to exploit the early data science with the LSTs at ORM for the study of gamma-ray astrophysical sources. Much of this early science will benefit from combined observations with MAGIC. In addition, the candidate could participate in the development of new analysis methods and in the study of the scientific prospects of CTAO. The candidate may also have the opportunity to get involved with the development of the optical intensity interferometry technique with Cherenkov Telescopes, capable of resolving stars with unprecedented angular resolution.

The candidate must have a Master’s Degree in Astrophysics, Physics or similar at the deadline of the application. A good English knowledge and strong interest in high-energy astrophysical phenomena, as well as experience in C++ and Python programming will be also valuable.

The application details can be found at the CIEMAT webpage, and the deadline is October 23rd. The procedure to apply is described in Spanish here and in English here

We encourage any interested candidate to contact us and get further details about the application: Carlos Delgado (carlos.delgado@ciemat.es) and Tarek Hassan (tarek.hassan@ciemat.es).
