About the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC)

The Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) pertains to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and is affiliated with the Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC). Officially created in 2008, ICE engages in theoretical and observational research across disciplines, including fundamental physics, astrophysics, planetary and Earth sciences. The institute also develops theoretical models, as well as instrumentation and technology for space and ground-based missions and experiments. ICE has about 90 members, two departments (Astrophysics & Planetary Sciences, and Cosmology & Fundamental Physics) and an Advanced Engineering Unit running 7 laboratories. The institute has obtained the María de Maeztu seal of excellence, as the Spanish State Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación, or AEI), dependent on the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN), provisionally resolved last week, for the period 2022 – 2025.

ICE has significant leadership in more than a dozen space missions, such as PAZ, LISA Pathfinder, LISA, Euclid, eXTP, Ariel, Athena and PLATO, as well as ground-based experiments like CTA, DES, DESI, PAU and CARMENES. We have two active ERC grants (one studying the impact of magnetic neutron stars in the explosive and transient Universe and one to study magnetic fields on exoplanets). ICE leads ‘PHAROS: The multi-messenger physics and astrophysics of neutron stars, a COST action comprising 400 scientists from 30 different countries that started in 2017, and SONET (Sustainable Offworld Network), a community of professionals in the academic and private sectors in EU and beyond, dedicated to the development of sustainable human settlements on other worlds, especially on the Moon and Mars.
