Joint PhD position between IFCA (Santander) and DIPC (Donostia / San Sebastián), Spain: Simulating the Diffuse Universe for Cosmology
Instituto de Física de Cantabria y Donostia International Physics Center · Spain
The Instituto de Física de Cantabria (IFCA, CSIC-Universidad de
Cantabria) and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC)
invite expressions of interest EoI for a 4-year PhD fellowship in cosmology. The
position should start no later than September 2027.
Upcoming galaxy surveys and line-intensity mapping experiments (SphereX,
MeerKLASS, SKA, etc) will measure the large-scale structure of the Universe with
high precision. Extracting the most cosmological and astrophysical
information out of these observations depends on fast and physically
motivated models of both the discrete galaxy population and the
diffuse emission from all sources. The PhD candidate
will develop new simulation-based tools for modelling and interpreting
these observations (connecting line emission with the underlying
matter field, modelling cross correlations between surveys and intensity
maps, development of emulators for simulation-based inference, etc),
with the exact focus depending on the student's interest.
The student will be co-supervised by Dr. José Luis Bernal (IFCA) and
Prof. Raúl Angulo (DIPC), and will be part of both research groups
throughout the PhD. The years 1-2, the student will be based at IFCA
in Santander, and years 3-4 will be based at DIPC in Donostia, but
we expect regular short and long-term visits to both institutions
throughout the whole PhD.
Funding is available for conferences, cosmology schools, collaboration
visits and computing resources, including access to large-scale HPC facilities.
How to submit your EoI:
Please send the following to jlbernal@ifca.es and reangulo@dipc.org, using the subject
line "COSMO-LIM PhD":
i) A CV, including academic transcripts
ii) A brief statement of research interests (max. 1 page)
iii) The names and contact details of two referees, who will be
contacted to send letters directly.
Deadline:
Full consideration will be given to EoIs received by Nov 8th.
IFCA and DIPC are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.
EoIs from all qualified candidates are welcome, and we
particularly encourage applications from groups underrepresented
in physics.
