The Astrophysics and Space Science Observatory (OAS) of Bologna, Italy, is advertising a fixed-term researcher position for two years, with the possibility of renewal for more years. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Giorgio Lanzuisi and the extragalactic/high-energy team at OAS on the search and characterization of AGN winds through X-ray and UV spectroscopy, from the local Universe to Cosmic Noon.

Job Description: 

The successful candidate will study and characterize AGN nuclear winds, such as UltraFast Outflows (UFOs) in the X-rays and Broad/Narrow Absorption Lines (BAL/NAL) in the UV band, analyzing data from the Multi-year Heritage Program WISSHFUL (https://sites.google.com/inaf.it/wisshfulproject), which focuses on the most luminous QSOs at Cosmic Noon. The research team will also have access to proprietary data from XRISM and explore the XRISM archive to study AGN UFOs in local Seyferts.

 

Salary and benefits: 

The position is at the same entry level as a permanent INAF researcher (gross salary of 38.465 €/year) and comes with extra benefits, such as full access to the Italian public
healthcare system, pension funds, maternity/paternity leave, parental leave, etc.

Eligibility: 

By Italian law, to apply for this type of position, the candidate must: 

(1) be a citizen of the European Union (EU), or 

(2) be a relative of citizens of the EU so that the candidate is eligible for a permanent residence permit, or 

(3) hold a long-term residence permit in the EU by the application deadline, or 

(4) have the legal status of refugee or subsidiary protection.

Additionally, by the application deadline, the candidate must hold a PhD in Astronomy or Physics, or have at least three years of documented research experience following the M.S. degree.

Requested expertise

The following expertise will be assessed by the selection committee: 

1. Physics and evolution of galaxies and AGN;

2. Observational properties of AGN winds and their role in feedback processes;
3. Models of highly ionized nuclear winds observed in X-rays and UV;
4. Characteristics and statistical methods of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy.
