Descripción/Description:

Owing to a last-minute resignation of the selected candidate we encourage candidates in the reserve list to contact us to join the IAC group of photoionized nebulae.

--------------

We offer a 4-year PhD contract (Formación de Personal Investigador-FPI) in the framework of the project “Dissecting the binary cores of planetary nebulae: A novel view of chemical abundances and gas kinematics” (AYA2017-83383-P) led by Drs Jorge García-Rojas and Pablo Rodríguez-Gil.  This program is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and University through the “Programa Estatal de Promoción del Talento y su Empleabilidad en I+D+i (FPI)”

The candidate must have a Master's Degree in Physics or a 5-year Physics Degree (“Licenciatura”), or alternatively be registered or admitted in a doctoral program at a university department on a related subject, at the time of signing the contract (see details in the official call). Main considerations for selection are good grades, good command of written and spoken English and a background in astrophysics and/or fundamental physics. Experience in modern programming languages such as Python and/or scripting languages will be valued.

The main objective of this PhD project is the exploitation of deep 2D integral field spectrophotometric observations of a sample of planetary nebulae with high abundance discrepancy factors (ADFs). These data have already been obtained with the integral–field spectrograph MUSE@VLT and MEGARA@GTC. We offer international collaborations with University College London and ESO researchers

Those people who meet the above requirements, are interested in doing their PhD in our group and want to know more details of the project please contact Jorge García-Rojas (jogarcia@iac.es) and David Jones (djones@iac.es) before July 28.
