Descripción/Description:

The Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) offers 4 PhD positions within the framework of the Maria de Maetzu Program and are available within the three generic research lines:

RL1) The fabric of the Universe: Using early-time multiwavelength observations to expand our understanding of supernovae origins, and better understand what the universe is made of and how it evolves. Research areas include supernovae and stellar transients. Find more details on the project available here

RL2) The extreme Universe: Understanding how matter and fields behave in extreme conditions of density and pressure, gravitational or electromagnetic forces. Research areas include theoretical and observation astrophysics of compact objects, nova explosions in X- and gamma-rays and high-energy astrophysics. Find more details on the project available here

RL3) From star formation to life: Searching for and characterizing extrasolar Earth-like planets, understanding how they form, and the analogy with our own planetary environment. Research areas include star formation, stellar physics, Earth observations, remote sensing of soil and ocean surfaces and more. A complete list of projects is available here

Positions are for 3.5 years and salaries are commensurate with other Spanish PhD fellowships. Starting date can be as soon as September 2023, but there is flexibility.

Application procedure: When applying, candidates should specify in the motivation letter to which RL they apply and include, in prioritized order, two projects within the primary RL. In case candidates wish to be considered for other RL, they should include one additional project corresponding the secondary RL of their choice.

Applications should include:

  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A transcript of Bachelor and MSc (or equivalent) grades.
  • A motivation letter, including the information specified above.
  • Additionally, up to two reference letters (minimum one) to be sent directly to phdmdm2023@ice.csic.es

Applications should be sent to Noemí Cortés at phdmdm2023@ice.csic.es  (Application deadline is July 7th, 2023)

About the Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC):

The Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) has been distinguished with the María de Maeztu Excellence Seal, as one of the top research centers in the country. It currently has 27 faculty members (3 others will joining soon). Their areas of research vary from engineering applied to several space missions to fundamental physics and cosmology, from high-energy astronomy to theoretical astrophysics.

ICE-CSIC is part of the "Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas" (CSIC, the Spanish National Research Council). CSIC is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe.

ICE-CSIC strives to build a culturally diverse community of researchers, dedicated to contributing to an inclusive environment. We encourage, in particular, applications by women and members of minorities.

ICE-CSIC is located in a modern building on the Campus of the Universidad Autònoma de Barcelona in Bellaterra, just outside Barcelona. The Campus is well served by public transportation (railways and buses), and a variety of accommodation options can be found both in Barcelona city center and in the smaller towns close to the University Campus (Cerdanyola, Sabadell, Terrassa, Sant Cugat, Sant Quirze, Rubí, and others).
