The Astronomy Department at Universidad de Concepcion, Chile, invites applications for a tenure-track professor position in all areas of astronomy.  Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a closely related field, as well as an established record of excellence in research.  A strong commitment to teaching and mentoring is highly desirable.  Applicants will be expected to teach in Spanish within 2 years. The start date is flexible and could begin as early as March 2017.

The Astronomy Department, in a state of vigorous expansion, currently includes 11 faculty, 10 to 20 postdocs, and approximately 30 masters and Ph.D. students. Current research expertise in the Department spans extragalactic and Galactic astronomy, including AGN, galaxy clusters and galaxy evolution, millimeter and sub-millimeter wave instrumentation, the distance ladder, Galactic archeology, star and cluster formation, stellar astrophysics, stellar evolution and variability, stellar clusters, and theoretical astrophysics focused on magneto-hydrodynamical and stellar-dynamical simulations.  The Department is internationally recognized for its public outreach and  teacher training programs.

In addition to existing computational and lab facilities, the successful applicants will have access to the 10% of observing time on all existing and future telescopes in Chile, including ALMA, APEX,  Gemini-South, Magellan, VLT, and in the future CST, E-ELT, GMT, and LSST.  The Department is a member of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV.  Further information can be obtained at http://www.astroudec.cl or directly from the Department Chair, Ronald Mennickent.
